Solar Panel Insurance: Protect Your Green Investment in Germany.

Installing solar panels (PV systems) on your home is a smart way to lower your carbon footprint and save on energy bills in Germany. However, a solar system is a major financial investment. Storms, hail, lightning, inverter breakdowns, or rodent damage can quickly put your system out of order. As your legal fiduciary representative, I help expats understand German insurance policies and secure their green investment with specialized Solar Panel Insurance.

Key Facts at a Glance

What is covered The system including battery storage against storm, hail, lightning, surges, theft, vandalism and operating errors, and depending on the tariff also loss of yield.
What is not covered Wear, defects for which the manufacturer or installer is liable, intentional damage and lower yield due to shading. Details
Who needs it For all system owners, especially for financed systems or systems with valuable storage.
What does it cost For a typical 10 kWp system usually around €80 to €180 per year, as a rule of thumb 0.5 to 1% of the system value. Non-binding guide value (as of 2026); your premium depends on your situation. You can calculate your exact premium in the comparison calculator on this page.
What to look out for All-risk cover, loss-of-yield insurance, co-insured battery storage and new-value compensation.

Christian's Story: The Summer Without Solar Energy

Fictional example for illustration; all persons and events are invented.

Christian, an expat software engineer, bought a house near Rheine and invested in a 10 kWp solar panel system on his roof, including a battery storage unit in the basement and a wallbox for his new electric vehicle. The setup worked perfectly, until a massive summer storm hit the region in July, bringing heavy hail and a nearby lightning strike.

While the hail damaged a couple of panels on the roof, the lightning caused a severe overvoltage surge that fried the inverter and the battery storage controller in the basement. The repair bill came to €6,500. In addition, because of supply chain delays, the replacement inverter took weeks to arrive. During this time, Christian had to buy expensive grid electricity and lost his expected feed-in tariff.

If Christian had relied solely on his standard home building insurance, he would have had to pay for the inverter repair and the grid electricity out of pocket, building insurance only covers direct storm impact and not internal electronic surges or yield loss. Fortunately, we had set up a specialized Solar Panel Insurance policy for him under his Broker Advantage. All costs, including the compensation for every single day the system was offline, were covered. His green transition remained a financial success.

Why Residential Building Insurance Isn't Enough

Many homeowners in Germany assume that solar systems are automatically covered under their standard building insurance (Wohngebäudeversicherung). However, this is only partially true:

  • Obligation to Declare: You must report the installation of a PV system to your building insurer. If you don't, you risk losing your coverage due to underinsurance. Even then, the premium will usually increase.
  • Limited Risks Covered: Building insurance only covers classic risks like fire, hail, storm (wind force 8+), or tap water.
  • No Electronic Breakdown Protection: Damage to the inverter from internal surges, operator error, short-circuits, or marten (animal) bites is generally excluded.
  • No Yield Loss Compensation: If your system is offline for weeks, the building insurance will not pay for the lost income or the extra cost of grid electricity.

A dedicated Solar Panel Insurance provides All-Risk Cover (Allgefahrendeckung). This means everything is covered except for a very small, clearly defined list of exclusions.

What a High-Quality Solar Insurance Covers

When comparing the German market, we look for premium terms that ensure you are completely covered:

  • All-Risk Cover: Protection against storms, hail, snow load, overvoltage, lightning, theft, vandalism, and operator errors.
  • Inverter & Battery Protection: Coverage for internal electrical damage, short-circuits, and control failure.
  • Marten & Rodent Damage: Martens frequently bite cables on roof-mounted systems; our recommended policies cover this.
  • Yield Loss Cover: Financial compensation for feed-in tariffs you miss out on, and grid-power you have to buy while the system is offline.
  • De- and Re-assembly Costs: Coverage for removing and reinstalling the panels if the roof itself needs repair after a storm.

Requirements for Expats

  • Valid German Address (Anmeldung)
  • German Bank Account (IBAN)

What Is Not Covered

Solar panel insurance covers many risks, but not every cause. Typical exclusions:

  • Wear and tear: Declining module output due to normal ageing is not covered.
  • Manufacturing defects: The manufacturer or installer is primarily liable for design or installation defects.
  • Shading and weather: Lower yield due to little sunshine or new trees is not an insured event.
  • Damage to others: If a module comes loose and injures someone, liability insurance pays; check whether your system is included there.

How I Help You in the Event of a Claim

As your broker, I am legally on your side, not the insurer's, and that matters most when something happens. This is how we proceed:

  1. 1. Report it quickly

Let me know as soon as possible, by WhatsApp, phone, email or directly in the simplr app. Many policy conditions require prompt notification.

  2. 2. Document everything

Keep photos, invoices, reports and the names of everyone involved. Good documentation speeds up processing considerably. How to write the claim report.

  3. 3. Document the yield

Keep photos, the date and the yield data from your monitoring. They help to prove the damage and any loss of yield.

  4. 4. I take care of the rest

I submit the case to the insurer, follow up and check the settlement. If the insurer refuses or cuts benefits, we look at the reasons together. What to do after a denial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my solar system automatically covered by my home building insurance?
No, usually not. Building insurance only covers classic risks like fire or wind damage. Technical defects in the inverter, short-circuits, panel theft, or yield loss are not covered. A dedicated Solar Panel Insurance closes these gaps.
What is yield loss compensation?
If your PV system is damaged and cannot generate electricity, the insurer compensates you for the lost feed-in tariff and pays a daily rate to cover the extra cost of purchasing electricity from the grid during repairs.
Are storage batteries and EV chargers (wallbox) included?
Yes, high-quality policies allow you to easily add storage battery units, wallboxes, and their cables. This ensures your entire clean energy infrastructure is protected.
How much does solar panel insurance cost in Germany?
Premium standalone solar insurance for a typical residential system (up to 10 kWp) usually costs between €60 and €100 per year. Given the high asset value and reliable protection, it is a very reasonable cost.
What happens if my roof needs repairs and the solar panels must be removed?
If your roof requires repairs (e.g., after storm damage), a premium solar insurance policy covers the costs for dismantling and re-assembling (De- und Remontage) the solar panels, so that the workers can perform their jobs.
Are solar panels protected against damage caused by heavy snow (snow load)?
Yes, damage caused by snow load (when heavy snow masses bend or break the solar panels) is covered under the All-Risk protection of specialised solar insurance. This is a important winter protection in Germany.
